ANPR Access Control

ANPR cameras, or to give them their full name, automatic number plate recognition cameras, have been around since the 1980s. Over the past few decades, they have become a popular traffic management solution across the United States, the United Kingdom, and beyond.

ANPR technology involves high-speed image capturing to identify a number plate as it passes through the infrared camera. At first, automatic number plate systems were only used by the police however, in recent years, their use has spread. Now, companies regularly use ANPR Access Control.

What Is An ANPR Camera And How Does It Work?

ANPR systems (sometimes known as LRP or license plate recognition systems) are often found at the entrance and exit of a parking lot to monitor the length of time vehicles have been in the car park.

LPR cameras work by using optical character recognition to read car number plates. The camera photographs the vehicle registration number of cars as they pass, then passes that image onto a reader. The reader then converts each license plate into ID numbers in the Wiegand format.

Each number plate will be compared with records on an existing database, with the access control system analysing to data to determine whether to permit the vehicle’s entry. If access is granted, the controller sends a signal that opens the car park’s barrier, enabling the vehicle to enter.

Why Do Car Parks Have ANPR Vehicle Access Control Systems?

Queues at the exit and entrance of car parks can be frustrating. With access control technology, ticketless payments become possible. The cameras can identify each vehicle and immediately determine how long it has been inside the facility to charge the correct amount to the owner’s account.

How Do ANPR Systems Improve Security?

An ANPR system is a key component of modern vehicle access security systems. While traditional security gates help to protect properties from intruders, they also rely on manual operation. A number plate recognition system, on the other hand, automatically grants vehicles easy access, saving employees time.

Access control systems use the latest technology to spot any unauthorised vehicle entering the area. As a result, they provide greater accuracy and security than checks carried out by human staff. As an added advantage, they allow for the addition of multifactor authentication for an even greater level of security.

ANPR Cameras And Toll Collections

Stopping at a toll booth causes delays and frustration for drivers. ANPR cameras allow for the removal of these interruptions to traffic flow since they can take images of each number plate and check it against the database of payments to ensure that all tolls are paid.

How Do The Police Use ANPR Systems?

The police use ANPR cameras like the Pro Series to quickly and accurately identify license plates and any information relating to them. As a result, they can rapidly determine whether a vehicle or its driver has been involved in a crime.

These cameras are also used by the police to identify speeding drivers as well as those who ignore red lights and other traffic signals in order to issue fines and deter further violations.

ANPR Systems And Smart Cities

These days, we are seeing a move toward Smart Cities, which involve the use of technology such as ANPR to better manage traffic flow.

ANPR cameras can monitor the flow of traffic effectively and analyze it, giving government bodies the information they need about the direction, volume, class, and speed of vehicles.

In all high-traffic areas, ANPR capabilities allow traffic management authorities to analyze parameters like traffic density, queues, and slow-downs. This, in turn, enables them to react more effectively and swiftly to potential issues in real time. They can also use these analytics to redirect traffic in order to improve its flow.

If there are areas of the city into which only certain vehicles meeting specific criteria are permitted, perhaps because of historical or environmentally sensitive reasons, an ANPR camera can ensure that only those vehicle classes are admitted.

It’s clear that ANPR systems have a host of uses in today’s modern world, and authorities are increasingly adopting this technology to simplify and streamline procedures.
